CP ENG 11

Quarter 1
In the first part of quarter 1, students read and study the novel The Things They Carried. After the novel we move on to Southern Gothic writing and the short stories of Flannery O'Conner and William Faulkner.
 
Quarter 2
Quarter 2 continues with American shorts stories by John Updike, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allen Poe and Washington Irving. We then move on to American Poets with a poetry project and subsequent exams.
Students will take a mid-term covering all information given in Quarters 1 and 2.
 
Quarter 3
In Quarter 3, students study the Salem Witch Trials and Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. In addition to this, students also read Macbeth by William Shakespeare. They "travel" the world through Google Maps and design a "bucket list" of places they are interested in visiting as well as beginning a study of eleventh grade vocabulary units.
 
Quarter 4
Finally, students finish the year reading George Orwell's novel 1984. Students discuss dystopian societies and delve into the idea of "How much control is too much control?"
Students will take a final exam encompassing all information in Quarters 1-4.
